Butter Cookies are a classic treat, known for their rich, buttery flavor and delightfully crumbly texture. Simple to make with just a few ingredients, they’re perfect for any baking enthusiast looking for a quick and delicious snack.

Ingredients:

  • 250g salted butter, softened: Ensure your butter is at room temperature for easy mixing.
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract: Adds a subtle, sweet aroma.
  • 75g icing sugar: For a smooth, sweet touch.
  • 250g plain flour: The base of your cookie dough.

How to Make Butter Cookies:

  1. Preparation:
    • Preheat your oven to 200C (180C fan/gas 6). This step is crucial for ensuring your cookies bake evenly.
    • Line your baking trays with parchment paper. This prevents sticking and makes cleanup easier.
  2. Creating the Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened butter, vanilla extract, and icing sugar.
    • Use an electric whisk to beat these ingredients until the mixture becomes pale and fluffy. This incorporates air, making your cookies light and crumbly.
    • Sift the plain flour over your butter mixture. This prevents lumps and ensures a smooth dough.
    • Gently fold in the flour using a spatula or your whisk, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can lead to tough cookies.
  3. Piping the Cookies:
    • Spoon the cookie dough into a piping bag fitted with a medium star nozzle. If you don’t have a piping bag, a ziplock bag with a corner cut off can work as a makeshift one.
    • Pipe the dough onto your prepared trays, forming small 5cm swirls. Leave enough space between each swirl, as the cookies will spread while baking.
  4. Baking:
    • Place the trays in the preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes. Keep an eye on them after 15 minutes; they should be pale golden when done.
    • Avoid opening the oven frequently, as this can cause uneven baking.
  5. Cooling and Serving:
    • After baking, let the cookies cool on the trays for about 5 minutes. This helps them set and makes them easier to transfer.
    • Gently move the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely. They will continue to firm up as they cool.
    • Once cooled, serve your butter cookies with a beverage of your choice or store them in an airtight container for later enjoyment.
