Now that you have all your ingredients ready, it’s time to turn them into a delicious chocolate buttermilk cake. Don’t worry, the steps are straightforward. Just follow the instructions below, and you’ll have a delectable cake to enjoy in no time.

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Combine dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add eggs and wet ingredients: Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla to the flour mixture and beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Stir in boiling water until well combined (the batter will be thin).
  4. Bake the cake: Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove from oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes, then remove from pans and place on wire racks to cool completely.
  5. Make the frosting: While the cake cools, make the frosting. Combine the melted butter and cocoa powder in a bowl. Alternately add powdered sugar and buttermilk, beating to spreading consistency. Stir in vanilla.
  6. Frost the cake: Once the cakes are completely cool, spread frosting on the top of one cake layer. Place the second layer on top, then spread frosting on the top and sides of the cake. Sprinkle with chocolate shavings or sprinkles if desired.
  7. Serve and enjoy: Cut into slices and serve. This cake is best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerated for up to a week.
