Chocolate Sponge Cake is a soft and fluffy dessert made with cocoa and basic baking ingredients. It has several layers with creamy chocolate between each one. People love it because it is sweet, rich, and perfect for celebrations or as a special treat.

Ingredients:

Chocolate Sponge Cake Ingredients:

  • 1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder, plus extra for dusting
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

Chocolate Frosting Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

How to Make Chocolate Sponge Cake:

1. Chocolate Sponge Cake:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla to the flour mixture and mix together on medium speed until well combined. Reduce the speed and carefully add boiling water to the cake batter until well combined.
  4. Distribute the cake batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick or cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean.
  5. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for about 10 minutes, remove from the pan and cool completely.

2. Chocolate Frosting:

  1. Combine the cocoa and the melted butter until smooth.
  2. Alternately add powdered sugar and milk, beating on medium speed to a spreadable consistency. You may not need all the milk, or you may need a little more. It should be creamy and spreadable, not runny or stiff.
  3. Stir in the vanilla extract.

3 Assemble the Cake:

  1. Place one layer of cake on a serving plate. Spread frosting on top.
  2. Top with the second cake layer, and spread frosting evenly on the top and sides of the cake.
  3. Dust the top of the cake with additional cocoa powder for a classic finish.
